There's nothing quite like that one little word to make Kids freeze, is there?
You're almost guaranteed the opposite reaction. Even if they force a smile, it always shows in the end result. Smiling on demand is like crying on demand. It just doesn't work.
So I never say 'smile!' but Kids always do. Why? Because they're relaxed and having fun. We joke, we laugh, we play.
I take the sort of photographs that make people say 'Look - 'Sam's doing her scrunched-up-nose thing!' or 'That's so typically Peter!'
It's called photojournalism. It's the difference between being on best behaviour putting on that smile, and just being a child, with all the little things that makes your child different.
